BRICS Eyes Expansion in 2026 Amid Mixed Member Sentiment
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov confirmed the BRICS bloc is considering further expansion by 2026, with discussions slated for the 18th summit in New Delhi this year. Russia and China champion the move, arguing new members WOULD strengthen the alliance economically through local-currency trade deals that bypass the US dollar.
India, Brazil, and South Africa remain cautious about uncontrolled growth, though all members must consent to additions. The group recently expanded in 2024-2025 with the UAE, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and Indonesia joining, while Argentina and Saudi Arabia declined invitations.
